List 99 Checks

What Are List 99 Checks?

List 99 Checks are the former name of DBS Children’s Barred List checks. Both lists contain(ed) details of individuals who are legally barred from working with under-18s, due to offences they have committed.

You can find out if a person is on List 99 / the Children’s Barred List by getting an Enhanced DBS check for them, but can only be carried out by their current or potential employer, and only if the applicant will be working with children in the course of their role.

If that’s your situation, Aaron’s Department offers DBS checks for employers, but you’ll want to read on to familiarise yourself with how List 99 and the DBS all works.

What Are List 99 Checks?

What does List 99 / the Children’s Barred List do?

The purpose of List 99 / the Children’s Barred List is to safeguard children by preventing unsuitable individuals from working with, or around them. This could be because they have committed criminal offences which were directly involved with children, or they are deemed to be a risk to children.

To this end, the Children’s Barred List holds the details of people who are legally barred from any form of work or volunteering with children (under 18s). Any roles that are off-limits to a Barred individual will require an Enhanced DBS check.

Does List 99 Still Exist?

The term “List 99 Checks” is still occasionally used (around 300 Brits Google search for “List 99” every month) but it no longer exists. In 2009, List 99 was renamed to the Children’s Barred List, managed by the Independent Safeguarding Authority.

Then in 2012, the ISA merged with another department to become the Disclosure & Barring Service – the DBS. Nowadays, if you want to check someone against List 99, the only way to do this is by getting an Enhanced DBS check for them, requesting a Children’s Barred List check as a part of the check, and asking the applicant to show you their certificate.

Bear in mind that only applicants who are, or will be working with Children are eligible for a Children’s Barred List Enhanced DBS check.
