- Standard: This check reveals both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. It is available to individuals engaged in specific roles or professions, as outlined in the Standard DBS Check eligibility guidance.
- Enhanced: This check discloses the same information as Standard checks, but also includes relevant information held by the applicant’s local police force. It can also encompass a children’s and/or adults’ barred list check.
Does A Counsellor Need A DBS Check Working with Adults?
Counsellors working exclusively with adults may require a Basic or Enhanced DBS check, depending on the nature of their role:
- Basic: Counsellors providing non-referral counselling solely to adults may only require a Basic DBS check.
- Enhanced: Counsellors working in roles involving regulated activity, such as psychotherapy and counselling related to healthcare, must have an Enhanced DBS check with a check of the relevant barred list.
Does A Counsellor Need A DBS Check Working with Children?
Counsellors working with children are eligible for an Enhanced DBS check with a check of the Children’s Barred List. This applies whether the counselling is provided on a referral basis or not.
