Introduction to Enhanced DBS Check – Eligibility Guidelines
Obtaining the correct level of DBS check for your staff is essential not only for making sure that you are following legislative guidelines within your sector, but for safeguarding the children or Vulnerable Adults who will be in the same location as your employees, if not under their care.
Who Qualifies For An Enhanced DBS Check – Eligibility Guidelines
Typically, an employee will qualify for an Enhanced DBS Check (with a check against the relevant barred list) if they are engaging in ‘regulated activity’ with either children or Vulnerable Adults.
If your employees are not engaging in regulated activity with either children or Vulnerable Adults, they may still be eligible for an Enhanced DBS Check.
If an employee is working at a frequency, at least once a week (or 3 or more times in a 30-day period) in a limited range of establishments, or “specified place“, then they would be eligible for an Enhanced DBS Check. This is regardless of if they are engaged in regulated activity.
Enhanced DBS Check – Eligibility Guidelines: Barred Lists
The Adult and Children’s Barred List are two separate lists that contain the details of people who are not allowed to work with children or Vulnerable Adults. People can be placed on these lists if they have committed offences against either children or Vulnerable Adults and are perceived to be an ongoing risk to these groups.
Enhanced DBS Check – Eligibility Guidelines: Barred List Checks
An applicant being eligible for an Enhanced DBS Check does not always mean that they will be eligible for a check of the Barred list. For example, a role that involves ‘Regulated Activity’ as defined by the DBS and typically involves direct, unsupervised contact with children more than three times in a thirty-day period will mean that the applicant will need a check of the Children’s Barred List. Other roles that usually require a Barred List check include,
- Teaching and healthcare for children
- Childminding and foster care
- Providing healthcare to adults
- Social work
- Assisting with money and bills due to illness, age or disability
- Transport due to illness, age or disability
DBS Tool for Enhanced DBS Check – Eligibility Guidelines
If you are still unsure whether an employee is eligible for an Enhanced DBS Check, the Disclosure and Barring Service have created a useful tool that you can use to check your employees’ eligibility for a DBS Check and what type of DBS Check you will be able to get for them.
Conclusion – Enhanced DBS Check – Eligibility Guidelines
In conclusion, obtaining the correct level of DBS check for your staff is essential for safeguarding children and Vulnerable Adults.
An Enhanced DBS Check is the highest level of DBS check and is required for any employee who is engaging in regulated activity with children or Vulnerable Adults.
